River Report: This week will have a wet and cold start, with rain and snow forecasted. The weekend should have better water conditions. The tail waters are still up and don’t have good clarity. The headwaters are about one foot above normal levels but are clearing up some. The feeder creeks are at normal water levels and should not be affected by the coming light rain and snow. By the weekend, the water levels should drop in the tail waters; Upper and Lower Shavers Fork, Cheat, Lower Glady Fork, Lower Dry Fork, Lower Laurel Fork and the Greenbrier. Early this week will not be too productive but there are still plenty of fish in the streams. The weekly stockings are continuing. Currently, Spruce Knob Lake doesn’t have ice on it and the road is clear at this time. This condition could change on Tuesday / Wednesday with the in coming weather.
Fishing conditions: Fishing in the headwaters should be more productive early this week. Overall, the weekend should be the best time to be out on the streams with the variations in water temp from the snow and rain. The water level and clarity will get better towards the weekend. The temperatures are forecast for the high 30s, over the first part of the week and warming up into next weekend. The stocked fish were active early last week, as well as the native fish. We were the better part of last week, trying to dodge the rain and high water, on a few of the larger streams. The clear days were great and our clients had some 20 fish days. Most of the fishing was sub-surface, very few dries. With stocking in full force, there are always new and active fish out in the streams. Fishing pressure is up and by this holiday weekend it will be high. A good mix of dry flies, streamers and egg patterns, should be working well this week. Beadhead GRHE bucktails and woolly buggers are still the best two flies for the week. The tail water streams will be high and cloudy for a few more days but sub-surface fishing will work. Temps are forecast to rise late in the week, so water temps should be good by the weekend.

River Report and Fishing Conditions for March 9 to 16, 2009, Northeastern West Virginia
River Report: This week has had a great start but has rain and snow forecasted this weekend into next week. The tail waters are coming down a little below normal water level and will stay there through the weekend. Most rivers are clear, for now. The headwaters are at or near normal levels. The feeder creeks are at normal water levels and should stay that way through the weekend. There is snow on the ground and snow with rain this weekend will bring the water levels up in the tail waters; Upper and Lower Shavers Fork, Cheat, Lower Glady Fork, Lower Dry Fork, Lower Laurel Fork and the Greenbrier. Freezing rain and snow this weekend will make it tough for fly fishing. This weekend will not be too productive but there are plenty of fish in the streams. The weekly stockings have started and are going on as scheduled. Spruce Knob Lake is still has ice on it but the road is clear at this time but could become bad late tonight and tomorrow.
Fishing conditions: Fishing in the tail waters was productive early this week. Overall, this weekend will not be a good time to be out on the streams with the variations in water temp from the snow and rain. The water level and clarity will get worse over the weekend. The temperatures are forecast for the low 30s, over the weekend and into next week. The stocked fish were active early in the week, as well as the native fish. We were out most of the week on a few of the larger streams and did well, fishing both surface and sub-surface. Stocking is continuing this week, so there are new and active fish out in the streams. Fishing pressure has been picking up this week but should be low this weekend due to the weather. We are still using a mixture of dry flies, streamers and egg patterns. Beadhead GRHE bucktails and beadhead hare’s ear nymphs and they are working well. I used mainly sub-surface flies this week because of high winds and cooler temps. The streams will be rough for a few days. Temps are forecast to rise by early next week but there is more precipitation forecasted for Thursday / Friday of next week. Tuesday / Wednesday look to be the best days for fishing coming up.

River Report and Fishing Conditions for March 1 to 7, 2009, Northeastern West Virginia
River Report: This week has had a cold start and has some light rain forecasted this weekend. The tail waters are coming down to a normal water level and will be near normal levels for the weekend. The rivers are clear for the most part. The headwaters are still a little high and have ice jams in most bends. The feeder creeks are at normal water levels with some ice but should be off by the weekend. The ice is off of the tail waters of most streams, except for some ice around the edges and large bends, Upper and Lower Shavers Fork, Cheat, Lower Glady Fork, Lower Dry Fork, Lower Laurel Fork and the Greenbrier. The ice flows may start to drift down stream by the weekend. This week's weather forecast is for warmer temps (50s) and some rain by the weekend but overall a good weekend for hitting the streams. Spruce Knob Lake is still has ice on it but the road is clear at this time. The weekly stockings have started and are going on as scheduled.
Fishing conditions: Fishing in the tail waters will be productive this weekend and most of the ice should be gone by the weekend. This week has been slow starting out with ice and snow. The water level and clarity will be good for fishing through the weekend. The temperatures are rising this week (40s), with 50s by the weekend. These temps will break up the ice jams on the headwaters, so by late week the ice will be flowing down stream. The stocked fish are active, as well as the native fish. We were out today on some of the larger streams and did ok, fishing both surface and sub-surface. Stocking is continuing this week, so there are new and active fish out in the streams. Fishing pressure has been light this week but will pick up this weekend. We were using a mixture of dry flies, streamers and egg patterns. Beadhead GRHE bucktails and beadhead hare’s ear nymphs are still working well. Today there were a few light hatches on the headwaters. I used BWOs and Light Hendrickson, in 18s and 20s. Best days to hit the streams this week are Friday, Saturday and Sunday; temps are going to be warm with light precipitation forecasted for part of the day Friday and Saturday.

River Report and Fishing Conditions for Feb 23 to Mar 1, 2009, Northeastern West Virginia
River Report: Again, this week has rain and snow forecasted through the weekend. The tail waters are still at a high water level and iced over in most of the bends and turns. The rivers are at a normal water level for now and clear for the most part. The head waters are still about 60% iced over today but the feeder creeks are at normal water levels with some ice. The ice is off of the tail waters of most streams, except for some ice around the edges and large bends, Upper and Lower Shavers Fork, Cheat, Lower Glady Fork, Lower Dry Fork, Lower Laurel Fork and the Greenbrier. Later in the week, some ice flows may start to drift down stream. This week's weather forecast is for warmer temps at night and rain and snow by the weekend. The water levels will rise by the weekend from melting snow and rain. Forecasts are for light snow through the weekend. Spruce Knob Lake is still iced up and the road is not clear at this time due to heavy snow last night. If you are going to the knob or out to the West Fork / Beaver Dam areas you will need 4-wheel drive. Additionally, Jan and Feb stockings are going on and have not been hampered too much by the weather or ice, to date.
Fishing conditions: Fishing in the tail waters should be productive this week, though most streams were about 30% iced over this week. The recent heavy snow will melt off this week by midweek causing the water levels to become high by the weekend. This week to early next week, the water level and clarity will be good for fishing through midweek. The temperatures are rising this week (30s), with 40s by the weekend. These temps will break up the ice on the headwaters, so by late week the ice will be flowing down stream. The stocked fish are active, as well as the native fish. We were out today on some native stream and did quite well, considering the weather. Stocking is continuing this week, so there are new and active fish out in the streams. I have not seen too many anglers out on the streams the past two weeks, so fishing pressure is down. As for flies, streamers and egg patterns are still your best bet for this week. Beadhead GRHE bucktails and beadhead hare’s ear nymphs are working fine. On the stream today, I used BWOs 18s and 20s and got a few takers. Best days to hit the streams this week is Wednesday and Thursday, warm temps and not precipitation forecasted.

River Report and Fishing Conditions for Feb 15 to 21, 2009, Northeastern West Virginia
River Report: This week, through the weekend, has a rain and snow forecasted. The tail waters are at a high water level. The rivers are high and the water is not very clear. The head waters are still about 60% iced over today but the feeder creeks are at normal water levels with some ice. The ice is off of the tail waters of most streams, except for some ice around the edges, Upper and Lower Shavers Fork, Cheat, Lower Glady Fork, Lower Dry Fork, Lower Laurel Fork and the Greenbrier. Later in the week, some ice flows may start to drift down stream. This week's weather forecast is for cold temps at night, some most of the ice on the streams will be there through early next week. The water levels should fall next week but this depends on the amount of snow received this weekend. Forecasts are for light snow through the weekend. Spruce Knob Lake still has ice on it but the road is clear, presently (forecast is for snow the rest of the week, heavier in higher elevations. Additionally, Jan and Feb stockings are going on and have not been hampered too much by the weather or ice, to date.
Fishing conditions: Fishing in the tail waters has been productive this week, though most streams were about 60% iced over this week. The fishing is slowing down this week due to the high water levels and lack of clarity. This week to early next week, the water level and clarity will not be good for fishing. The temperatures are low this week (20s), with lower night temps on the weekend. These low temps will keep the ice on the headwaters. Snow and ice are not helping out this week but some fish are active. Stocking is continuing this week, so there are new and active fish out in the streams. As for flies, streamers and egg patterns are still your best bet for this week. Beadhead GRHEs were working well this week too.

The head waters are about 40% iced over today but the feeder creeks are at normal water levels with no ice. The ice is off of the tail waters of most streams, except for some ice around the edges. With warmer weather and some rain in the forecast, all of the ice on the streams should be gone by the weekend. The water levels will be high this week with the melting snow and rain. Fishing conditions: Fishing in the tail waters should be productive this week, though most streams were about 40% iced over earlier in the week. The fishing is picking up due to the water levels and clarity. Mid week or later the water level and clarity will not be as good as the beginning of the week. The temperatures look good this week (40s), with lower temps on the weekend. Snow and ice have made it a little tough out there last week but the fish are still hitting.
